Date Night For One

Lately it seems my time belongs to everyone else in the world but me. I’m sure many of you can relate to the feeling of giving till you have nothing left for yourself. My closest friends will tell you that I’m always the one suggesting they take some alone time for themselves, but some how I’ve been neglecting to follow my own advice. It hit me a few days ago on my routine commute to work that I needed A Date Night For One. The past few weeks I’ve become a resident at Starbucks using their space as my study hall, living room, dining table, office, nap place, etc, you get the picture. I’ve spent so much time there, that if you took a whiff of some of my jackets you’d swear I was some kind of sustainable coffee farmer of the sort. My epiphany led me to decide to make friday night all about me, the me that likes to wander around the city and look at pretty things, the me that enjoys savory food, the me that enjoys reading labels on random food things. What I was not going to be on this auspicious night was a student stressed out with school work, nor a Starbucks resident.

I ended up at one of my favorite spots in NYC, The Meatpacking District. I had worked in the cobblestone enclave many moons ago when you could see pork and cow slabs hanging from a hook on random blocks. Those days are long gone now, and what you see today is so incredibly different. I always say it all started with Jeffrey, the then lone fashion boutique on 14th between 9th & 10th. This Jeffrey guy must have been some kind of fortune teller to be able to see that over a decade later he’d be one of many on this fashion runway of a street. Anyhow it all made me feel nostalgic.

I decided to walk over to The Chelsea Market, one of the best markets in Manhattan. Most of the same shops are still there from 10 years ago plus several new additions like Anthropolgie which replaced the flower shop I used to buy my tulips from. I ended up at the Bowery Kitchen Supply, oh man was I in heaven. I had forgotten how many gadgets they have tucked away in this kitchen treasure trove.

Eleni’s makes the cutest looking cookies. I went for the Butter Scotch Large Cookie. It was all that a Butter Scotch cookie should be , crunchy, sweet, and buttery. Dessert, First Round.

Fashionably sweet New York cookies…Caaaute!

An impromptu dinner at Buon’Italia was divine. That first bite burst with flavor in my mouth layer upon layer of fresh basil, romano cheese, and nuggets of Bolognese all in between.

Could not pass this crumbly buttery treat from Chelsea Market Baskets. It simply was meant to be that I meet the very cookie that I had spent hours before downloading recipes for. Oh and yes this was Dessert, Second Round.

These are MY FAVORITE BROWNIES. They can do no wrong in my eyes. I have fond memories of heading over to The Fat Witch Bakery during lunch time and sampling all the different kinds they came up with. Everyday there stood this brownie-clad girl handing out tiny morsels of goodness on a toothpick. Alas, the Final Round of dessert.

These darlings came home with me…

1.      2.      3.

4.      5.      6.

1. TRUFFLE SALSA: Delicate truffles chopped into yummy bites of delicacy immersed in velvety extra virgin olive oil. I’m thinking a simple pasta dish with some fresh romano pecorino and a splash of cream infused with some of this salsa. Oh and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc of course. 2. MASON JAR: It’s empty now, but it will soon be filled with homemade pickles or savory chutney. 3. MEASURING GLASS: Aside from it looking utterly tiny cute, it will help me figure out how many millilitres are in a tablespoon for when i’m following a recipe in metric measurements. 4. STAINLESS STEEL MIXING BOWLS: The perfect bowls to whip up whip cream or for a make-shift double boiler for melting chocolate. 5. ORANGE HAND JUICER: Great to get every bit of juice out of your oranges, lemons, and limes. 6. PASTRY ESSENTIALS: After taking my first Pastry 101 class I had to get these, {tart pans} for baking sweet or savory tarts, {wooden rolling pin} for rolling out the perfect pastry dough, {zester}, this will definitely be my new best friend in the kitchen for infusing flecks of citrusy flavor into creams, sauces, cookies, you name it, i’m zesting it in there. 7. TINY WHISK KEY CHAIN: One never knows when you’ll be in a bind and need a mini whisk! Plus it was just too cute to pass up.
